Welcome to 2026 (2) By Babatunde Olugboji
This week, I want to speak to those who have been drained by life, have faced deprivation, beaten, battered and broken; those who have been pummeled by the vicissitudes of life and were almost hanging by a thread as 2025 closed. There is hope. 2026 will be a better year. The year holds a promise of better things, of greater works.
Jesus assured us in John 14:12-14 that is something to look forward to: “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
In other words, as believers, we have the assurance of being able to do:
• Greater things than Jesus in terms of the area he covered while on earth. Geographically, Jesus ministered primarily in Palestine, but we, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to spread the gospel worldwide
• Greater things because of the indwelling Holy Spirit which empowers us to decree a thing and that thing shall be established.
• Greater things in being active participants in God’s grand plan through deploying our spiritual gifts.
The reality, however, is that the promise is not automatic. It is conditional. It is only available to those who believe, abide, and allow God to enlarge their capacity, including in prayer, worship, and generosity. As Prophet Isaiah pointed out, “If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land; but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” (Isaiah 1:19-20)
The degree of the manifestation of God’s promise depends on our capacity to receive. (Ephesians 3:20-21) and our ability to be proactive, obedient and seize opportunities.
In 2 Kings 13: 14-19, Elisha, dying, was visited by King Jehoash of Israel, who wept over him. Elisha asked him to shoot an arrow eastward, “the LORD’s arrow of victory” over Aram, and then commanded him to strike the ground with arrows. Jehoash, for some reason, struck the ground only three times. Elisha rebuked him, pointing out that if he had struck five or six times Israel would have completely defeated Aram; now they would win only three victories. This was a case of missed opportunities. A half-hearted effort.
To tap into the promises of God this year, we must learn from the situation of King Jehoash. We must walk by faith and in obedience. We must run with God’s word, and be completely dependent on him. Nothing can stop you in 2026.
Paul faced prison, he was ship wrecked, left for dead, whipped, troubled by a thorn was on his side, yet he lived to fulfil his destiny. Joseph was humiliated by his brothers, sold into slavery, landed in Potiphar’s house, was lied to and incarcerated, yet, he fulfilled his destiny.
Elijah was threatened by Jezebel, Moses fled the palace in Egypt as a fugitive, Hezekiah was harassed by the King of Assyrians, Nehemiah faced ridicule from Sanballat and Tobiah, Judah under King Jehoshaphat was invaded by the Ammonites and Moabites, but God showed up for them all. This same God will show up for you this year.
Remember, you’ve got grace to do greater things than Christ did. Life can’t hold you down.
Will you receive this by faith?
To be continued.
Have a great week.
