Receive a ‘Double Portion’ in 2025 By Babatunde Olugboji
The term “double portion” appears six times in the Bible, signifying a gift that is twice as substantial as what others receive. This notion is first articulated in the Mosaic Law, which states that the firstborn son is entitled to a double share of the inheritance, recognizing his status as the first fruits of the father’s strength (Deuteronomy 21:17).
In addition to this right of succession, the firstborn’s inheritance is notably greater than that of his siblings. Hannah, who was unable to bear children, received a double portion from her husband as a means to comfort her sorrow, reflecting his affection for her (1 Samuel 1:5).
Towards the end of Elijah’s ministry, he inquired of his assistant Elisha what he could do for him before his departure. And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” (2 Kings 2:9)
Elisha requested a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, signifying his desire to be recognized as Elijah’s successor and to receive an enhanced measure of prophetic power. The numerous miracles performed by Elisha throughout 2 Kings serve as evidence that he was indeed endowed with this double portion.
It is worthwhile to consider if this was generally a good or a bad thing. Normally we don’t think of one person inheriting the ministry of another. The relation between Elijah and Elisha – and God’s apparent blessing on their ministries – shows that at least sometimes God intends one person to inherit the ministry of another.
More than anything, Elisha could have asked for anything, but he asked for this. When offered everything, he didn’t seek wealth, worldly power, or status. He wanted all he might need to fulfill God’s purpose and call on his life.
Isaiah 61:7 assures Israel of a double portion of joy and blessings, stating that shame will be replaced with joy and honor, leading to everlasting happiness in their land. The Messiah’s reign during the millennium is expected to bring this enduring joy.
Similarly, in the account of Job, God restored to him twice what he had lost during his trials, illustrating the concept of a “double portion” of blessings. However, not all instances of a double portion signify blessings. Revelation 18:6 describes a judgment against Babylon, where a double portion is a metaphor for severe retribution, emphasizing the notion of a significant amount.
The Mosaic Law established a double portion for firstborn sons, a tradition that has historically symbolized God’s abundant blessings. Jesus Christ, referred to as the “firstborn over all creation,” embodies this concept as the Blessed One and rightful Heir of all.
What do you think is missing in your life? What would you ask God for if he offered you anything? Asking God for all you need to fulfill his highest purpose for your life is a great thing to ask for. Get a double portion of that.
Have a great week.
