Living in Accordance with God’s Word By Babatunde Olugboji
To identify as a Christian entails a belief in Jesus Christ and the accompanying texts that discuss life before, during, and after His earthly existence. This text is the Bible, God’s Holy Word. Within the Scriptures, beyond the various narratives and characters we encounter, there are numerous verses that provide insight into the reasons God has bestowed His Word upon us. One such verse can be found in the Book of Psalms.
Such verses are rare instances where the Bible reflects upon itself. These passages emphasize the significance of not only hearing God’s word but also living in accordance with it. To live a life aligned with God’s will, we must first understand how He has called us to live. To gain this understanding, we cannot solely depend on our own reasoning; rather, we must listen to what the Bible conveys.
This verse from Psalms 119 encapsulates the wisdom we derive from engaging with the Bible. Furthermore, the verse unveils a crucial truth – to embody the Christian life is to emulate Christ, who perfectly exemplified God’s teachings.
How Is God’s Word a Lamp Unto My Feet?
The expression “God’s Word is a lamp unto my feet” serves as a metaphorical assertion designed to highlight the wisdom derived from adhering to God’s guidance. This specific chapter in Psalms is penned by an anonymous author. Throughout this passage, the writer employs an acrostic structure, consisting of twenty-two stanzas, each containing eight lines. Every stanza commences with a letter from the Hebrew alphabet.
This chapter does not present a unified narrative, as each stanza addresses different subjects and employs various tones. However, a recurring theme throughout is the concept of comprehending God’s word. The author reassures that those who follow God are without blame (119:3). The speaker expresses a desire to improve in their adherence to God, which can only be achieved by living according to the Lord’s commandments. The phrase, “God’s word is a lamp unto my feet” is found later in the text, specifically in verse 105.
This verse advances the notion that dependence on God’s Word is the sole means to live successfully as a Christian. In society, lamps serve to illuminate paths for movement and activity. The Hebrew term for lamp is niyr. This characterization of a lamp is more akin to the gentle glow of a candle. The implication is that visibility of the surrounding area is limited, yet sufficient light is provided for navigation.
With adequate light to traverse through life, God offers us the guidance we require, not all at once, but as necessary. Thus, God’s Word functions for the speaker as a source of direction. In the verses that follow 105, the author continues to seek God’s instruction (Psalm 119:108). The speaker expresses a desire to learn from God. This exemplifies how God’s Word acts as a lamp, imparting wisdom to the believer’s mind. When they liken God’s Word to a light on a path, that path represents life. Within the context of Psalm 119, adhering to God’s word in every situation leads to a more fulfilling existence.
Walking in the light is distinctly different from following the ways of the wicked (Psalm 119:110). If God’s Word serves as a lamp, guiding us along the pathway of life, then it is clear that God’s Word is designed to assist us in living prosperously. God does not fully disclose the future with the lamp He provides. Nevertheless, our prosperity in living according to God’s word does not depend on how much of the path ahead we can perceive. That prosperity is not based on financial or occupational measures, but rather on a closeness to God. He provides us with just enough to achieve success in life (2 Corinthians 12:9).
God is the primary concern of the speaker in Psalm 119, and according to Jesus, He should also be our foremost concern (Matthew 22: 35-37). If we concentrate on loving God and obeying His Word, we will lead better lives.
Have a great week
