How God’s Word Brings Comfort at Difficult Times By Babatunde Olugboji
The Bible represents the Word of God, intended for His people, and encompasses all that we require to achieve completeness (2 Timothy 3:15-17). Among the essential elements it provides is comfort. The Bible addresses comfort extensively and includes numerous passages that offer solace during life’s challenging moments. Indeed, the Bible serves as a source of comfort for us!
Life is filled with numerous challenges. Even believers are not exempt from setbacks in various forms. It may be in the areas of our health, finances, relationships, and other areas, because life happens. At times, these setbacks occur suddenly; at other times, they unfold gradually. We may have endured the loss of a loved one or experienced abandonment by someone dear to us. Our health may be declining, or our financial situation may be precarious.
Regardless of the nature of these challenges, they impact all of us at some stage in our lives, and the Bible asserts that such experiences are unavoidable (Job 5:7; Genesis 3:17; Proverbs 22:8). The Bible is indeed the Word of God (Isaiah 55:11), authored by His servants under the guidance of the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21), and serves as both a compass and a support for our everyday existence.
In what ways does the Bible provide us with comfort? Perhaps the most significant feature of God’s Word lies in the promises it contains, which the Lord extends to those willing to place their trust in Him. These promises are the source of our comfort, drawing upon even the faintest glimmer of saving faith to yield the rewards of comfort, peace, and joy through the Holy Spirit. Numerous promises within the Bible must be coupled with faith to be fully realized, for without faith, it is impossible to please God, who is the source of comfort during times of distress (Hebrews 11:6; 2 Corinthians 1:5; Psalm 46:1).
Evidently, the promises made by God cannot be claimed in the same manner by those who do not believe, with whom God remains perpetually displeased (Psalm 7:11). Nonetheless, it is through God’s grace, facilitated by the process of regeneration that occurs at the moment of conversion, that these promises are fulfilled and serve as the very motivation that encourages His followers towards increased faith and enhanced obedience.
These elements are interconnected; we place our trust in God’s promises, and He has assured us that He will reward us with joy, peace, and comfort – qualities that are beyond the reach of the world. One of the most profound sources of comfort found in the Bible is Isaiah 26:3: You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Embrace this verse in faith, seeking the Lord’s assistance, and you will be comforted, in the name of Jesus.
Have a great week
