End of Year Matters – By Babatunde Olugboji
A young wife once remarked to her husband, “Please remember to bring home another mousetrap.” Her husband replied, “What’s wrong with the one I purchased yesterday?” She responded, “It is full.”
As the year comes to a close, dispose of full mousetraps. True, end-of-year matters encompass more than just mousetraps.
For many, it involves taking down Christmas decorations and lights and storing them away. End-of-year matters involve dismantling, packing, and tidying up. And perhaps some additional tasks.
A woman entered her bathroom at home. Upon entering, she noticed her husband weighing himself on the scales, pulling in his stomach. The woman thought to herself, “He believes he will weigh less by sucking in his stomach.” Thus, the woman somewhat sarcastically remarked to her husband, “That’s not going to help.” Her husband replied, “Of course it will. It’s the only way I can see the numbers.”
End of year matters. It could signify making a commitment to improve one’s physical condition. Most of us recognise that we have lost some ground concerning our health, gained weight, and we wish to reclaim that ground and shed that weight!
End of year matters. Dismantle. Pack away. Clean the house. Improve fitness. Eat healthier. Exercise more. Strive for improvement. Aim to be better.
Proverbs 23:7 says, “As a man thinks, so is he.” Our initial course of action is thought. If we do not think, we will not act. We must think in the right direction to act in the right direction. Consider what you would like to do to enhance your life. Create a list. Sit down and contemplate it. Formulate a plan of action and pursue it. Clean your home. Improve your physical condition. These actions will enhance your self-esteem, and you will benefit from undertaking them.
End-of-year matters should also address the spiritual aspect of life. We are not merely physical beings. We are also spiritual. The eternal essence of both man and woman is spirit. Spirit endures forever. This implies that we should nurture our spirits. We ought to prioritise the spiritual aspect of life even more than the physical.
I Timothy 4:8 states, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” Focusing on spiritual matters will benefit us more than any exercise regimen or dietary plan! Godliness can assist us in this life and offers the promise of the life to come!
The healthiest individuals in the world cannot enter heaven without Christ! The wealthiest individuals in the world cannot enter heaven without Christ! The most hygienic individuals in the world cannot enter heaven without Christ! The most organised individuals in the world cannot enter heaven without Christ! Thus, we must prioritise the spiritual aspect of life over the physical!
A marriage counsellor once asked a housewife, “Do you believe that your role as a mother and homemaker is beneath you?” She responded, “No, I feel it is beyond me.” Sometimes we perceive certain aspects of life as beyond our reach. We feel as though they are unattainable, similar to spiritual advancement.
We must find a way to move forward in 2026. We must grow spiritually. We must ascend the mountain and cease sliding downhill. Philippians 3:14 says, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” I press on. Isn’t this what you desire in your Christian journey?
Have an excellent 2026!
Have a great week.
