THE CROSS – A Fitting Metaphor for Pain By Dr. Segun Oshinaga

Pain is part of life. We are ‘feeling’ creatures. But if we don’t handle pain right, it can ruin our lives, frustrate our purpose and diminish our destiny. Our Lord and master, Jesus knew pain.

“Looking to Jesus the author and finisher of the faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God”. (Hebrews 12:1-2)

The cross is a fitting metaphor for pain. It is true that there is no GAIN without PAIN. But if you don’t survive the pain, you can’t enjoy the gain. So it is important to know what to do to survive the pain. An accurate understanding of the place and purpose of pain is required if we are to be prepared to handle the pains of life.

I love the way the Message Bible puts it – “Because he never lost sight of where he was headed-that exhilarating finish in and with God-he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God.”

When we understand and appreciate our purpose in life, we can put up with ‘anything along the way’, however hard, tough or painful they may be. There are different types, shapes and shades of pain. In the following days, we will explore in detail some of these types of pain like:

    1. Rejection
    2. Shame
    3. Hate
    4. Discrimination

We must go through something. Nobody ever amounted to anything who didn’t go through something. Often, the intensity of what we ENDURE determines the density of what we ENJOY. I dare you to welcome and thank God for the challenges you face today because your pains are raw materials that God uses to bake your destiny.

Let me close today with one of the most powerful Scriptures I know – “For we do not have a high priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.” ((Hebrews 4:15) (New Heart English Bible))

Relax! Your Lord and Master, Jesus walked that road before and emerged victorious and unblemished. You too can win over pain.

Keep going! Keep giving! Don’t you stop. The world is waiting for your arrival.
