Is Gossip a Sin? By Babatunde Olugboji
The Hebrew term for “gossip” found in the Old Testament is characterized as “one who discloses secrets, a person who spreads tales or engages in scandalous talk.” A gossiper is an individual who possesses confidential information about others and chooses to disclose that information to those who should not be privy to it. Gossip can be differentiated from the mere sharing of information in two significant ways:
Purpose
Gossipers frequently aim to elevate their own status by disparaging others, positioning themselves as sources of exclusive knowledge.
Nature of the information shared
Gossipers tend to discuss the shortcomings and missteps of others or disclose potentially humiliating or disgraceful aspects of others’ lives without their consent or awareness. Even if their intentions are benign, it still constitutes gossip.
In Romans, Paul elucidates the sinful tendencies and lawlessness inherent in humanity, indicating that God has unleashed His wrath upon those who disregard His commandments. As a consequence of their departure from divine guidance, He allowed them to succumb to their sinful inclinations.
Among the transgressions listed are gossip and slander (Romans 1:29b-32). This passage underscores the gravity of gossip as a sin and its association with those who are subject to divine wrath.
Another demographic historically recognized for engaging in gossip is widows. Paul advises widows to refrain from gossip and idleness. These women are depicted as “gossips and busybodies, uttering things they should not” (1 Timothy 5:12-13). Due to their frequent interactions in one another’s homes, they often overhear and misinterpret situations, particularly when such information is relayed repeatedly. Paul notes that widows may develop a tendency to visit various homes in search of ways to fill their time.
The notion that “idle hands are the devil’s workshop” serves as a warning against permitting idleness to infiltrate our lives. “A gossip betrays a confidence; therefore, avoid a person [or woman] who speaks excessively” (Proverbs 20:19).
It is important to recognize that gossip is not solely a female vice; individuals of any gender can partake in this behavior by relaying information shared in confidence. The book of Proverbs extensively addresses the perils associated with gossip and the emotional harm it can inflict. For instance, it states, “A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue. A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret” (Proverbs 11:12-13).
Furthermore, the Bible warns that “a perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends” (Proverbs 16:28). Numerous friendships have been damaged due to misunderstandings that originated from gossip. Those who indulge in such behavior merely create discord and foster feelings of anger, bitterness, and pain among their peers. Regrettably, some individuals seem to thrive on this chaos, actively seeking opportunities to undermine others. When confronted about their actions, these individuals often deny the accusations and respond with justifications and excuses.
Instead of acknowledging their faults, they tend to shift the blame or downplay the severity of their actions. As noted in Proverbs, “A fool’s mouth is his undoing, and his lips are a snare to his soul. The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s innermost parts” (Proverbs 18:7-8).
Those who exercise restraint in their speech can protect themselves from misfortune (Proverbs 21:23). Therefore, it is essential to be vigilant about our words and to avoid the sinful practice of gossip. By surrendering our natural inclinations to God, we can receive guidance in maintaining righteousness. Let us strive to adhere to the biblical principles regarding gossip by speaking only when it is necessary and appropriate.
