Dangote Must Resist Unionisation
– Pastor Femi Adebayo
Pastor Femi Adebayo, the President of Club Abraham International, a faith-based fellowship of developing man value, character and godliness, has added his voice to the lingering crisis brewing in the petroleum sector.
He lamented the government-owned refineries that have remained moribund and non-functional for years despite colossal expenditures on turnaround maintenance that have yielded no tangible results.
Pastor Femi said he is saddened that the oil and gas unions have thrived on the corruption and inefficiency entrenched in the sector while feeding fat on the system. NUPENG and PENGASSAN have not been part of the solution, but have remained part of the system problems.
He added, “In contrast, Dangote Industries pays above the minimum wage, demonstrating that productivity and fair compensation can coexist without union interference. In Nigeria, many unions have contributed significantly to low labour productivity and organisational development. Their unholy alliance with corrupt management led to the collapse of institutions like NNPC, NEPA, NPA, FSB, Union Bank, PAN, VON, Textile companies and other production organisations”.
“A truly enlightened and patriotic union would have fought to restore refinery operations by confronting corruption, and not protecting it”, he bemoaned.
“Dangote Oil must resist unionisation of his organisation to maintain efficiency and competitiveness”, Pastor Femi declared.
He stated that leading financial institutions, such as GTBank and Zenith Bank, among others, thrive without unions. At First Bank, union membership was made optional to minimise unproductive and regressive influences.
Pastor Femi regrets that it is difficult to identify a unionised organisation in Nigeria that is simultaneously competitive, profitable, transparent, and growing. Across sectors, unions have resisted reforms, with teachers’ competency tests being opposed, and ASUU’s rigidity toward higher education policy reforms has prolonged academic programmes unnecessarily, to the detriment of students and national development.
