Believers as Watchmen By Babatunde Olugboji

In Ezekiel 3, God reminded Ezekiel of his watchman role. One of the primary responsibilities of a watchman is to be on the lookout, to stand on the wall, looking out to see when an enemy is coming or when anything is approaching that those inside the walls need to be warned about. This was why God said, “I’ve made you a watchman, Ezekiel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.”

Ezekiel 3:17 contains a sobering warning and those who heed those warnings are watchmen on the wall to warn others based on what God has said. Today, we are surrounded by people who are dwelling in sin, whose ways do not please our Holy God, those who are on a road that leads away from Jesus, a road that leads to eternal everlasting suffering in hell, whether such people are aware of it or not.

Eternity and suffering are inevitable for those who fail to heed this warning. As believers, God has given this word of warning to you and I. Every one of us who is in Christ should know this. And we’re surrounded by people who appear not to know what’s around the corner for those dwelling in sin.

Ezekiel 3:17 reminds us of our responsibility as watchmen God has strategically positioned for our generation, to be a warning to them. The question is who do you need to warn? Who do I need to warn? And who do we need to warn this week that judgment for sin is coming, and that salvation is possible? Who do we need to warn that God loves us, that he has made away in Jesus to be saved from sin, to be saved from eternal, everlasting suffering in hell, to experience eternal, everlasting life now and forever in heaven?

Our prayer is that God would help us to faithfully dispense this warning to people around us this week. God, help us not to be silent on the wall. Help us to be faithful watchmen everywhere we find ourselves: at home, work, school, and other places. We pray that our lives would be a picture of God’s warning and his pleading and his loving voice that want to bring salvation.

2 Peter 3:9 reminds us that God doesn’t want anyone to perish, but for all to experience eternal life. I pray that this week God would give us that desire, a desire that overcomes our timidity, our fear, or anything that would keep us from approaching others to proclaim God’s word as a warning.

I pray that God will use our lives and our families and churches to warn people around the globe who need to hear and heed this warning and come into awareness of God’s love for them. God, help us to be faithful to deliver it to them speedily. According to Ezekiel 3:17, help us to be faithful watchmen.

    Have a great week.
