God’s Word as Light By Babatunde Olugboji

The word of God is the light that empowers followers of Christ to see in the dark. Psalm 119:105 says, God’s word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. The psalmist used that metaphor in recognition of the fact that workers went out to do their chores early in the morning when it was still dark. They could not use their hands to hold a lamp while working. Therefore, they strapped a lamp around their ankles so the light would shine on a path for them to see where to walk.

Also, lamps are used in Bible times to create light for movement and activity. The Hebrew word for lamp is ‘niyr.’ This description of a lamp is akin to the subtle light of a candle. The suggestion therefore is that there is limited visibility of the surrounding area, but just enough light to navigate.

With enough light to navigate the complexities of life, God word gives us the guidance we need, not all at once, but as needed. In this way, the word of God operates for the psalmist as a form of direction. In the verses following 105, the psalmist goes on to ask God for teaching (Psalm 119:108), as a way of learning from the Almighty God. As such, the word of God is not just a physical lamp, but it plays an essential role in bringing wisdom into the mind of a believer. The totality of Psalm 119 is for us as believers to abide by God’s word in every situation because it leads to a more fulfilling life.

Take note that walking in the light means not walking in the ways of the wicked (Psalm 119:110). If God’s Word is a lamp, helping us to navigate the pathway of life, then we know God’s Word is meant to help us live successfully. God does not fully reveal the future with the lamp He gives us. However, living by God’s word is not contingent upon how much of the path ahead we can see. It is not contingent on financial and career advancement, but on a being close to God. And He gives us just enough to be successful in life (2 Corinthians 12:9).

From the foregoing, we can conclude that the word of God is described as a lamp and a light, because it contains the truth. In it we read about our sinfulness and His holiness. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, who is the true source of Spiritual light. If we receive and follow Jesus as our Lord and Savior; we will not walk in darkness or sin, but we will have the light that leads to life.

God’s word is a lamp for our feet that prepares and equips us for our journey through life. As today’s believers, the word of God can still light our path and show us where to go in this dark world. It will light up the darkest places of our lives. This verse illustrates the idea that reliance on the Word of God is the only way to a successful Christian life. God’s word can still light our path and show us where to go in the dark. It will light up in the darkest places of our lives.

Will you allow the word of God to be your light and your lamp?
